EHS Garden Project
The Edison High School Garden was completed early October 2013 after almost a year of work. E.Y.E.S. raised over $3000 to make this project a reality and thanks to all our donors and dedicated volunteers, we have already been able to donate 5 harvests to soup kitchens in the first season alone. Of course, building a garden is a typical project for an environmental group, but when planning the project, we thought of more than just the environment.
In our modern society, we have no time to pause our busy lives and appreciate our planet. We wanted the garden to be a reminder for students about their powerful impact on our fragile plant, so we located an area at EHS that was constantly visible to students. The courtyard at Edison High provided a protected environment surrounded by classrooms and windows. With this visibility, we saw a growing amount of support for our project and new interest in the environmental cause.
Students will also benefit from the garden, not only when it comes to health and nutrition, but also education. Since the entire garden is built, led and maintained by students, this will engage the younger generation in actively participating to see how much work goes into growing food. In addition, the we worked to build and extra 4'x4' bed for Science classes to conduct outdoor experiments pertaining to plants. We have also bought picnic tables and plan to buy clipboards for our Outdoor Classroom area where teachers can come and conduct class outside.

The EHS Garden will benefit the school in many ways, but the main success of the garden comes with the harvests. The Garden Team has decided to give some of the harvests to our school's cooking classes so they have access to fresh produce. The majority of the harvests, however, will go to local soup kitchens in the community.

To achieve the full potential of the garden, the E.Y.E.S. Club at EHS has partnered with the school's Greenhouse Club. This provides an opportunity to plant seeds early to obtain a larger and longer harvest season. In addition, the Greenhouse Club brings students from elementary schools in the district and shows them some of the animals kept in the greenhouse. In the years to come, we plan to incorporate the garden and environmental education into this trip.
We see the EHS Garden only as a stepping stone. Only weeks after the completion of the garden, we are already working with another school to build a garden. At Edison High School, the garden project as opened new opportunities for E.Y.E.S. to conduct large-scale projects. The EHS Team is now preparing for a new season of projects, and E.Y.E.S. is working with young leaders worldwide to implement grassroots projects better than anything we have done before.

The EHS Garden has almost every major vegetable you can think of in addition to pumpkins, peaches, berries, grapes, strawberries, watermelons and more. Spanning approximately 1,500 square feet, the garden also contains a compost bin, picnic tables, a bed for our school's cooking and science classes, a shed, and more. Donations
Most of our garden is complete, but we still need the funds to finish some important details. We hope to add these by January 2015 so the EHS Garden is perfect for the Spring. Please help us make this school garden a success and donate whatever you can!
